[For RTBT Series; appendix to 1 Corinthians 5-7]
Based on 1 Corinthians 5-7, we can come up with a pretty good list of what it means to be “spiritual” (See 1 Corinthians 2:15-16). Here are a few, but take the time to add your own observations to this list. A spiritual person or church should:
-
Never tolerate unrepentant sin.
-
Practice church discipline when necessary; including an eternal perspective of church discipline (“turning over to Satan” implies real spiritual consequences).
-
Seek to settle disputes in a way that glorifies God, asking church leaders or wise members to help.
-
Flee immorality and seek to glorify God in our bodies.
-
Cling to a healthy, biblical view of sex — it is only for marriage and is not a sin within marriage.
-
Never prefer divorce, but recognize that it is sometimes necessary.
-
Never command celibacy or singleness, but present it as a legitimate option.
-
Always strive toward “undistracted devotion.”
